Wood Carving

"Tatakai", playing board: 12 x 12 x 3/4", individual pieces: 1/2 x 3/4 x 3/4", plywood, oil acrylic, and gel ink pen.

Created for Design 2, the class placed an emphasis on three-dimensional objects rather than creating art on a two-dimensional plane. Above is "Tatakai" which is essentially a chess set using the style of a Shogi board. The pieces are representative in Japanese kanji of their Western contemporaries like the Pawns being the "Ashigaru" footsoldiers and the King being the "Emperor". The entire piece was carved from 3/4" thick plywood sourced directly from Home Depot using an oscillating bandsaw and a belt sander. The pieces were colored in the clan colors of the Oda and Takeda clans which were historically bitter rivals during the Sengoku Jidai period in Japanese history. The kanji was written using a gel ink pen since I needed fine tip to draw the characters carefully, and the characters were sourced using Google Translate from English to Japanese.
